Datuk Mustafa Fuzer Nawi

Datuk Mustafa Fuzer Nawi is one of Malaysia’s most distinguished violinists and conductors, with a career spanning over four decades in performance, education, and national cultural leadership. Born in Ipoh, Perak in 1960, he began his formal violin studies under Datuk Abdul Fatah Karim before receiving a Malaysian Federal Government Scholarship to pursue advanced training at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover in Germany under the renowned Professor Oscar C. Yatco.

Upon returning to Malaysia, he was appointed the founding Concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra of Malaysia (NSO) in 1993, a position he held until 1997. During this formative period, he played a key role in shaping Malaysia’s orchestral and chamber music landscape, founding both Kamerata Kuala Lumpur and The Suria String Quartet, and performing internationally with ensembles such as the Kölner Kammerorchester under Helmut Mueller-Bruehl.

In 1997, he was awarded a Cultural Grant from the Malaysian Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism to pursue postgraduate studies in orchestral and choral conducting at the Conservatorium Hogelschool Enschede, Netherlands. In 1999, he was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, a post through which he gained national acclaim for elevating orchestral standards and expanding artistic programming.

His distinguished conducting appearances include performances with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, NSO at the Esplanade in Singapore, and ASIAN Orchestra Week in Japan. He has also collaborated with some of Malaysia’s most celebrated artists, including Dato’ Seri Siti Nurhaliza, Anuar Zain, Yuna, and Ella.

A committed educator, Datuk Mustafa has mentored generations of Malaysian violinists and conductors, many of whom now serve in leading orchestras throughout the country. He has held teaching positions at numerous universities and institutions and was appointed Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Music, Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2023.

His dedication to nurturing young talent is exemplified by his role since 2010 as Music Director and Conductor of GENIUS Seni Muzik (formerly PERMATA Seni Muzik), a national program for musically gifted children.

Datuk Mustafa was awarded the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) in 2008 and the Panglima Mangku Wilayah (PMW) in 2018, which carries the honorific title Datuk, in recognition of his profound contributions to the Malaysian music industry.

Though officially retired from the NSO in 2020 after over 27 years of service, Datuk Mustafa Fuzer Nawi remains actively engaged in Malaysia’s music scene—performing chamber music with his Karl Trio KL, conducting workshops, delivering masterclasses, and advocating for early childhood music education.

Most recently, he has joined the Hsia & Goh Chamber Orchestra as a Principal Conductor and Senior Artistic Advisor, lending his vast expertise in orchestral leadership and performance to this bold new initiative. His involvement signals the orchestra’s commitment to musical excellence, mentorship, and the development of Southeast Asia’s next generation of professional classical musicians.
